Dynamite Chocolate Orange Affogato

HAPPY LABOUR DAY EVERYONE!  While Labour Day isn’t the official end of summer, it sure feels like it. Kids go back to school tomorrow, so I’m sure that there are a lot of parents who are going to be facing tomorrow with either dread or elation! Either way, treat yourself tonight with a simple, easy, summery indulgence!

Affogato is one of those brilliant Italian desserts. You know the kind where you are thinking, hmmm people are coming over and I haven’t gotten my butt in gear to bake. (Let’s be honest, as we all know, I’m not a huge baker!) Simply put, it is ice cream and coffee.

This dessert is extremely simple to whip up and is great for a hot summer night. Affogato means “drowned” in Italian and that’s what happens to the ice cream here, it gets drowned in coffee. It’s kind of like the Boozy Ice Cream Sodas we made awhile back, except you are subbing coffee for soda. Traditionally, it’s made with hot coffee, but I found that hot coffee melts the ice cream too quickly, so I use cold coffee instead.

Now, wanting to make it look like a little effort went into this dish, I’ve made it more adult and complex by adding Grand Marnier and finishing it with the fabulous Salty Paloma (a Canadian company!) Dynamite salts.

This dessert is so easy to customize. Want to use vanilla ice cream? Go ahead. Switch up the Grand Marnier for Amaretto, Frangelico, Cherry Brandy or Mint Pastile? Shoot. Leave off the whipped cream? Your call. Try different flavours that you love and create your own custom dish!

Prep time: 5 minutes; Serves: 4 (can easily be doubled or tripled)

What you need:

  • 1 pint chocolate ice cream
  • 1/2 cup cold coffee (that’s about 2 tbsp per serving) (you can substitute with decaf if you want)
  • 1/4 cup Grand Marnier (this is about 1 tbsp per serving)
  • whipped cream (I whipped 250 ml of 35% whipping cream with 1 tsp of vanilla) (can be made ahead and left in fridge)
  • Salty Paloma Dynamite Salts (garnish)

What you do:

  • In a cup or martini glass, add a big scoop of chocolate ice cream
  • Pour 2 tbsp of cold coffee over the ice cream
  • Add 1 tbsp of Grand Marnier

  • Top with a large scoop of whipped cream
  • Sprinkle Salty Paloma Dynamite Salts on top

  • Serve
